Our Principles

Our activities in the philGRAD graduate academy are based on four basic principles:

  • Good scientific practice
  • Structured and transparent supervision
  • Acquisition of job-relevant competences
  • Professional counselling and individual support

We support all doctoral researchers of the Faculty of Humanities to deal with the Principles for ensuring Good Scientific Practice at Heinrich Heine University, to respect them and to adhere to them to the best of our knowledge and belief. Accordingly, we initiate a discourse and raise awareness of the Principles of Good Scientific Practice. To this end, we offer regular workshops as an introduction to good scientific practice.

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities takes into account the importance of teaching and sensitising docotral researchers to the topics surrounding good scientific practice by making participation compulsory for all doctoral researchers of the Faculty since 2017 with the revision of the doctoral regulations.

For philGRAD it is important to be a contact of integrity for you. If you have any questions or would like to raise a concern, please feel free to contact me, the philGRAD coordinator, at any time. Furthermore, the ombudsperson for good scientific practice is always available to you as a contact person in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Further information is available here.

A well-functioning supervision contributes significantly to the success of a doctoral project. That is why we support you and your team in entering into a reliable, transparent and regular supervision situation together, and in maintaining this situation during your doctorate and maintaining it at a high level of quality. In doing so, we always follow the recommendations of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the German Rectors' Conference (HRK). Principles of good supervision have been incorporated into the current doctoral regulations (2017). A written supervision agreement and regular progress meetings provide a reliable framework for you and your team.

To ensure that the obligatory annual progress meetings with your supervising team are not forgotten in the heat of your research activities, we will remind you in good time by email. Even if the minutes are not submitted on time, we will ask you and, if necessary, your supervising team.

It is important to us to support you in communicating your concerns and needs with your supervision team in a transparent and constructive manner. If you are ever uncertain and/or have questions, we are happy to offer you professional support in confidential counselling sessions.

Whether you choose to pursue your professional career within the academic world or outside the Academia depends not least on your skills, interests, passion and curiosity. Since we in the humanities and social sciences are not trained for a specific profession, it is all the more important to apply the knowledge and professionally relevant skills we have acquired during our doctoral sresearch to job advertisements and translate them into job specifications. We often find it difficult to admit our own competences, strengths and interdisciplinary knowledge. This is why we offer you individual career advice, career coaching and workshops on both career orientation and application strategies.

We attach great importance to supporting you in your orientation and preparation for the start of your career with both counselling interviews, individual coaching as well as career workshops and networking events. The Doctorate Transcript, which summarises your extensive qualifications in a handsome folder, also offers your future employer a clear overview of your academic career.

Of course, we are always available to assist you should you encounter challenges, crises and conflicts and support you through individual and confidential counselling interviews.
