Counselling interviews with students, doctoral researchers and postdocs can sometimes be very challenging. As a junior/professor, it is up to us to assess and evaluate the work and research performance of third parties who are sometimes in a strong relationship of dependency to us as supervisees, assessed and/or employees.
We are not always aware of the many day-to-day roles from which we advise and assess. Especially in the personal union of supervisor and counsellor/assessor, the roles can quickly become mixed.
Without clarification of roles and transparency of expectations, it can happen that our counterpart is concerned that the feedback may have an impact on all or some areas of dependency, such as the assessment and appraisal of research and work performance, on future contract terms and/or financial and non-material funding.

Unclear role awareness as well as unspoken expectations can ultimately lead to communication difficulties and misunderstandings, which can escalate into anxiety and psychological stress.

But how can we change this and why does it seem to work better with one or the other colleague? An exchange among colleagues in a trusting, protected setting can bring relief and insight as well as open up strategies for action and solutions for future care discussions.

In small, closed groups, using different methods of collegial case consultation, mutual support is initiated through an exchange of experiences and a change of perspective, and learning from each other is encouraged.

Goals
The aim is to support each other in problematic counselling situations and to develop solution strategies for the future. Through mutual counselling among colleagues, dealing with challenging counselling contexts is shared in the professional environment on the one hand and learning from the experiences and best practice examples of all participants on the other.

The aim is to create a trusting and protected space in which strategies and collegial support are learned and promoted according to solution-oriented methods of case counselling and a fair feedback culture in order to gain more sovereignty and security in future counselling contexts.
