Coaching for doctoral students with neurodivergence
A doctoral program is a demanding phase of academic training. It requires not only scientific competence, but above all self-organization, perseverance, and the ability to cope with uncertainty. For neurodivergent doctoral students, this can present additional challenges, such as in terms of structuring their work, processing sensory input, or maintaining a consistent work rhythm. This is exactly where our coaching comes in.
What is coaching?
Coaching is professional support that helps doctoral candidates to master their individual challenges and make targeted use of their personal resources. It is a structured, solution-oriented process that is accompanied by Dr. Gina Möller as a certified coach: In discussions, you reflect on your current situation, clarify your goals and develop concrete strategies to make your promotion self-determined and successful. The coach does not provide direct solutions, but asks specific questions, helps to uncover blind spots and supports you in finding your own answers.
Typical topics in coaching for neurodivergent doctoral students may include:
Developing individual work methods: How can I use my concentration, energy, and attention in a way that supports me rather than hinders me?
Structure and self-management: What strategies can help me break down my dissertation into realistic, manageable steps
Dealing with overwhelm and sensory overload: How can I recognize my limits early on and develop a sustainable work rhythm
Shaping writing processes: How can I find ways to write that suit me—even beyond traditional work methods?
Self-understanding and self-acceptance: How can I integrate my neurodivergent traits as part of my academic identity?
Dealing with feedback and expectations: How can I develop a constructive approach to external demands and internal pressure?
Coaching offers you a safe space for reflection and orientation: It helps you to tackle challenges in a targeted manner and to go through the doctoral period with more clarity and self-confidence.
