The disputation is the crowning conclusion of a doctorate! After submitting the dissertation, we face the university public and defend the arguments, the research questions and the research environment of our doctoral thesis in an interdisciplinary scientific discussion: a professional discussion at the highest level!

Even though we have already presented our research project to an expert audience several times in subject-specific doctoral colloquia or conferences, the disputation sometimes worries us because of its examination character:

  •     What can I expect?
  •     How do I prepare?
  •     What is the composition of the examination committee?
  •     What requirements must the thesis paper meet?
  •     How can I prepare for possible questions?
  •     How do I react to difficult questions?
  •     How do I present myself?
  •     What do I do if I have a blackout and/or cannot answer?
  •     ...

But look at it this way: these and other questions and doubts are quite normal and due to the excitement before the big degree. With your dissertation, you have already achieved your academic goal and can confidently enter the interview as an expert on your research project. The questions will relate to the written work and the research environment. Finally, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge in a 20-minute presentation and subsequent discussion. What a great opportunity!

If you are still unsure or have questions about the procedure or simply want to have another preparatory talk, then register for individual disputation coaching. We will be happy to support you!

As a doctoral student, you also have the opportunity to take part in a disputation. A disputation is usually open to the public. The dates for upcoming faculty disputations are posted 14 days in advance in the showcase in the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (Building 24.51, Level 01).
