Design your supervision and annual progress meetings

Information event of the Doctoral Office

The Doctoral Regulations of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities require a supervision agreement and annual progress reports to be submitted to the Doctoral Office for acceptance as a doctoral candidate.

But what are these agreements and reports good for and what benefits can they have for your own doctorate? Especially at the beginning of a doctorate, but also during the long-term doctoral process, there are many questions, such as:

  • What exactly is supervision?
  • What is the difference between a first and second supervisor?
  • What criteria do I use to select the second supervisor?
  • To what extent can I actively shape the supervision relationship?
  • What are my rights and obligations?
  • How can I address my wishes, needs and expectations?
  • How do I prepare for progress meetings?
  • What do I record in the progress report and why?
  • What do I do if there is no "progress" to report?
  • What do I do if there are disagreements/annoyances/conflicts within my supervision team?

Dr. Julia Siep from the Doctoral Office of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities talks with the participants about the scope and possibilities for active participation in the supervision agreement and the progress reports, but also about rights and obligations and about options for action in the event of a conflict.
